The site was vacant land that was to be re-developed into a set of commercial units. VertaseFLI were contracted to undertake the enabling works which involved disposal of unsuitable materials, cut and fill earthworks. Preliminary works involved drafting a materials management plan to allow the re-use of site won materials.
Prior to mobilsing the site VertaseFLI drafted and registered the site under a Materials Management Plan to allow site-won materials to be re-used on site. This involved liaising with the Local Authority and Environment Agency to ensure agreement with the proposed re-use of materials.
Prior to mobilising on site a VertaseFLI engineer identified a large quantity of peat within the soils that was substantially different to the site investigation data. Liaising with the client a full site investigation was launched to determine the extent of the peat, its thickness, and an estimate of the material to be removed to facilitate the end development.
Due to the financial impact of the peat removal and the lost time on the program, VertaseFLI constructed a number of trial pads which considered total removal, partial removal and different geotextile configurations in relation to achieving the end design california bearing ratio (CBR).
Information from VertaseFLI’s site investigation and the trail pad tests prompted the client to opt for total peat removal for the spine access roads
with the importation of quarried stone to ensure the end design CBR was achieved.
VertaseFLI then facilitated the works for an access road to allow the excavation and off site disposal for the peat. Efficient planning of peat disposal with backloading of the quarried stone allowed for a fast removal and replenishment of materials on site limiting the delay to the programme.
Construction of the spine roads were carefully tracked to ensure that the compaction complied with the series for Highways Works 600 and to ensure that the requirements stipulated in the Materials Management Plan were fulfilled.
A successful result for the Greenside Way site ensured solid access roads that would withstand the pressures generated by piling rigs on a site that previously consisted of peat.
