Preparation of existing ground service, including removal of existing Vegetation; installation of drainage chamber and land drain pipework; installation of GCL Liner.
Vertase FLI was contracted by SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK to install a designed Geosynthetic Capping Layer (GCL) at the SUEZ MRF Facility. The design included the installation of Geosynthetic Clay Liner Capping System, the placement of a cover layer of soils above a GCL layer, and the construction of perimeter drainage channels and associated minor civils infrastructure.
We were appointed as Principal Contractor and accompanied by an independent CQA (Construction Quality Adherence) assessor based full time on site who ensured that the CQA plan meets the specified quality. The CQA plan controlled virtually 100% of the project, from quality of materials, conformance of installation & testing to topographical levels.
Upon discovery of elevated levels of contaminants within the watercourse, an engineered cap was required to be installed to prevent rainwater causing contamination contained in the subsoil below to ‘wash out’ into the adjacent watercourse.
Once the cap had been installed, the site was topsoiled, wildflower seeded and the boundary of the site was planted with trees and bushes to provide ecological benefits.
As the works were very prescriptive working in line with the CQA Plan we ensured our delivery of the project was as effective as possible and ran according to the specification.
The main challenges that we faced in installing the Geosynthetic Clay Liner Capping System was the ground conditions. Severe wet weather prevented us from seeding and planting effectively, and we were compelled to wait for better weather before completing the landscaping.
Our role was to prevent the cross contamination of the adjacent watercourse. Our work was successful in achieving its objective and we created cost savings by sourcing cheaper materials than those specified in the CQA Plan, but that still complied with the specifications.
We also sourced topsoil from another VertaseFLI site which was local to this one, this saved not only on disposal costs from out other site but also on purchasing costs for topsoil at Avonmouth
